Intranet Advent Day 7 – Why we still need offices in a digital workplace
We’re counting down to Christmas with a stocking-filler tip every day.
Hoping to get snowed in this December so you don’t have to go into the office? An effective digital workplace gives us the potential to work wherever we wish, but the office is still the environment of choice for many of us.

I’m sure you’ll have seen one of the many articles about people who run their business from a tropical beach, but you have to wonder how many of those businesses involve running a blog about how great it is to work where you like. For the rest of us, the novelty would soon wear off as your keyboard fills up with sand and the power cable fuses in the lapping azure sea.
And have you actually tried using a modern screen in the sunlight? All you see is yourself.
Even the notion of being productive on a daily commute can be challenging when many would be happy to merely have a seat.
This brings me to cafes, often touted as the ‘third place’ (after the office and home) and a source of stimulation for the creative executive. The wifi is good, the coffee even better, and many thrive on the background chatter. Just don’t expect to enter a state of contemplative flow with all that noise around you.
So with all of your colleagues working abroad, on the train and in coffee shops, perhaps the office isn’t such a bad place to get some quiet, productive work done after all. It’s almost like it was designed for that purpose isn’t it?
