Employee apps report cover.

The buyers’ guide to employee apps

Engaging employees, particularly firstline workers, has become a priority for many organisations. Traditional intranets aren’t always the best fit, and a new category of agile, mobile apps has emerged.

Our independent assessments of the leading employee apps will guide you through the busy market to help you build the best-fit shortlist for your organisation.

Covering 22 communication-focused apps (17 in-depth reviews and cataloguing 5 more), our assessments are independent, balanced, and honest, allowing you to see the functionality and strengths that meet your requirements.

Each review highlights the workforce app’s features and benefits, assessed against nine common business scenarios, so you can find the most suitable product from a local or international vendor. We’ve perfected our review process over six years on our SharePoint intranet in-a-box report.

Why buy the report?

  • You won’t find this level of detail anywhere else. There are other websites and reports that cover some of these products, but we provide detail not seen elsewhere. Over the coming months we expect the report to grow and become fully comprehensive, giving a clearer view of the best products on the market.
  • It will save you time. We spent well over 300 hours doing the research, so the cost of the report will be quickly recovered by saving you weeks of effort.
  • You’ll see more of the market, rather than having to rely on Google, attending conferences, or what others in your industry are doing.
  • You’ll make a better decision – we know what to ask vendors as we bring world-class digital workplace experience to the process. The reviewers have worked in different specialities of digital workplaces, including technical development, digital communications, intranet management and HR technology. Between them they have over 100 years of experience, working with AstraZeneca, Diageo, GSK, Marie Curie, Ofgem, Rio Tinto, Royal British Legion, Sony, TUI Travel, Unilever, Vodafone and Wessex Water, and many others.
  • Our opinions are genuinely independent. We accept no fees for inclusion from vendors, have no re-seller relationships, or sponsorship, and we don’t sell any software products ourselves.
  • We tell you the bad as well as the good. We base our scores on business scenarios rather than a list of features so we aren’t easily impressed or swayed by a vendor’s claim to be unique. Each review was checked by three people, and the scores were balanced as necessary.
  • We cover vendors from USA, UK, Ireland, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, Estonia and France.

Appiness

This is a buyers’ guide to ‘workforce communication apps’ or employee apps. The employee app market is a mostly unexplored space, changing and growing far faster than other enterprise tech topics. You may have heard of Staffbase, SocialChorus, or Smarp, but we know of over 60 products in this complex, ever-changing market.

The ease of deployment is a major factor in the decision to improve digital working with an enterprise grade app. Unlike many other enterprise solutions, an app can be deployed very quickly, and so adoption becomes all about the roll-out strategy and the change communications. It’s easy to engage a vendor and procure an app too – even considering any unique security or legislative needs – and so HR, Operations, or the central digital team might decide the budget and take the lead. We’d hope and expect Internal Communications, Learning and Development, and IT to take a direct interest as well.

Beyond the engagement and communication benefits of reaching frontline staff, these apps extend the digital workplace into people’s pockets, enabling people who rarely sit down with a computer to get things done when and where they like. Employee apps are productivity apps, helping individuals and teams get their work done in a professional yet social environment.

We’ve brought over six year’s of research experience, having published our SharePoint intranet report since 2015. Through our consultation work with clients, we’ve come to understand communication requirements and experience expectations. Leading vendors through our scenarios and review process has given us an insight into their strategic approaches, strengths, and roadmaps.

As ClearBox Consulting focuses on the business side of the digital workplace and does not sell any products, we are able to give you genuinely independent evaluations.

As a comprehensive buyers’ guide, our 400-page report will reduce your research time and accelerate your decision-making process, assuring stakeholders that you’ve evaluated the market.

Once you’ve compared the scores, and read our assessments, you’ll be able to put together the best-fit shortlist of potential solutions, matched to your organisation’s size, budget, and priorities. Downloading our report will give you critical, in-depth knowledge of the market and kick-start your app deployment project.
Product focus. Comms. Ops. HR. DW..

Being in the cloud and on mobile devices, deploying an app is as much about your engagement and comms strategy as about IT. We know it’s not only Internal Communications teams that choose an app as a key channel; HR and Operations Directors are keen to lead in transforming their digital approach, to reach site and field workers.

In every full review you will find a the ‘Product Focus’ chart. This chart indicates the style of product; not a score of how well it performs. As an analogy, wines can be “full bodied” or “fresh and fruity” in character, but there are still good bottles and bad bottles of each.
