We’re counting down to Christmas with a stocking-filler tip every day.
Do you browse or search the intranet every day for the same online apps and info?
What if you had intranet shortcuts just like you have keyboard shortcuts?
Lundbeck has implemented such shortcuts, which are also used to quickly share long intranet addresses more easily.
For example, instead of sending a colleague the following link:
http://mycompanyintranet/SharePoint/_layouts/_output/Facilities_Welcome/Catering_Site/Canteen/Menu.aspx
… you could send them a memorable short URL, like http://open/food
Short URLs are great for printed material, like posters (below) and PDFs.
If you love keyboard shortcuts for your computer and desktop apps, I think you’d love to be able to type some obvious and short addresses into your browser to get the info you know you want.
Frederick Zebitz showed me that they have loads of designated ‘short URLs’ to commonly required information and apps. Not every one is relevant to every employee, but as you can imagine, people easily memorise the ones that help. The short URLs are so obvious that you can often guess them.
Lundbeck call the system ‘Open’ and consider it to be an internal Delicious. The IT Collaboration team created it using .NET, but you could find a SharePoint plug-in to help you roll your own.
I think this sort of functionality is needed within every intranet product, and I’d like to know which vendors have it.
